CIRI for consumers

The Construction Industry Register Ireland (CIRI) is Ireland's national statutory register for providers of building works. Established by Government, CIRI is designed to help ensure that construction work is carried out by competent, compliant and accountable construction professionals and businesses.

The register will include builders, contractors, specialist subcontractors and tradespeople operating across the construction sector. Registration demonstrates that a construction provider has met the eligibility requirements set out in legislation and has successfully completed CIRI's assessment process.

The introduction of CIRI represents an important step in raising standards across the industry and providing greater confidence for homeowners, consumers, developers and clients undertaking building projects.

The statutory CIRI Register is being introduced on a phased basis. Beginning in January 2027, different divisions of the construction industry will be called to register over a number of years.

The first division to be required to register will be large residential building providers of over ten housing units and builders of apartments. Further divisions covering other categories of providers of building works will be introduced in phases thereafter.

Once a division has been formally called to register, businesses within that category will have twelve months in which to complete the registration process. Registration will be granted only to applicants who meet the eligibility requirements established under the Regulation of Providers of Building Works and Miscellaneous Provisions Act 2022 and the criteria set by the CIRI Admissions and Registration Board.

Following the twelve-month registration period for a division, providers of building works within that category must be registered with CIRI to legally undertake work covered by the legislation.

As the construction sector includes a wide range of specialist disciplines, trades and technical services, the register will continue to expand over time as additional divisions are established and brought into the registration framework.

Once the registration phase for the first division has been completed, a public online register will be made available, allowing consumers to search for and verify registered providers of building works under that division.
